The origin of cosmic magnetic fields is one of the outstanding open
issues in modern cosmology. I discuss here as these fields could be
generated during neutrino decoupling if large fluctuations of the lepton
number were present at that time. A detectable background of
gravitational waves may have been produced during the same process.
