The role of magnetic-field collapse in theoretical models of pulsar cooling is investigated. The decay time of the magnetic field from an original value of at least 5 TG is estimated as about 1 Myr on the basis of observations of pulsar periods and their time derivatives, whereas for most neutron stars it is greater than 10 Myr due to the high electrical conductivity of the relevant regions. If this pulsar field-decay time is confirmed, a significant field-decay contribution (as ohmic losses) to the overall photon luminosity of the pulsar is to be expected for pulsars more than 100,000 yr old.
