As in the Reversed Field Pinch, spherical force free plasmas with open boundaries (such as the edge of some magnetic stars) can relax to a magnetic equilibrium and oscillate about this minimum energy state. Magnetic oscillations in stellar atmospheres can drive magnetosonic waves, which may explain why p-modes in peculiar A (roAp) stars are symmetric with the star's mean magnetic field. The driving mechanism for p-modes in roAp stars is an open question, unanswered by either convection (as in the Sun) or by kappa mechanism (as in delta Scuti stars). The proposed A> magnetosonic modes may also drive a turbulent dynamo, consistent with observations of magnetic fields in radiative stars, which lack the convection required for the usual alpha-omega dynamo.
