As in the Reversed Field Pinch, spherical force free plasmas with open boundaries (such as the edge of some magnetic stars) can relax to a magnetic equilibrium and oscillate about this minimum energy state. Magnetic oscillations in stellar atmospheres can drive magnetosonic waves, which may explain why p-modes in peculiar A (roAp) stars are symmetric with the star's mean magnetic field. The driving mechanism for p-modes in roAp stars is an open question, unanswered by either convection (as in the Sun) or by kappa mechanism (as in delta Scuti stars). The proposed magnetosonic modes may also drive a turbulent dynamo, consistent with observations of magnetic fields in radiative stars, which lack the convection required for the usual alpha-omega dynamo.
