The concept of 'magnetic buoyancy' as a possible mechanism by which magnetic fields from within the sun might rise to the surface and contribute to solar magnetic activity is discussed. Operation of the magnetic-buoyancy mechanism is briefly described, and it is shown that solar rotation has a very strong influence on the mechanism. The effect of magnetic buoyancy on solar dynamics is considered. It is concluded that if magnetic buoyancy is responsible for bringing to the surface the fields that are observed, the origin of these fields must be strong (at least about 1000 G) azimuthal magnetic fields in the top half of the convection zone.
