Recent x-ray observations have shown that a substantial fraction of
newly born neutron stars have magnetic fields of several 1014
G. They reveal themselves as soft gamma repeaters and anomalous x-ray
pulsars and may account for the missing radio pulsars in young supernova
remnants.
