It is proposed that the `M value' of an igneous rock should be 100Mg/(Mg
+ Fe) and that the `Mg value' should be 100Mg/(Mg + Fe 2+ ). A plea is
made to standardize any necessary corrections for Fe 2 O 3 so that Fe
2 O 3 /( Fe 2 O 3 + FeO ) = 02 for basic rocks.
