M5 is a globular cluster in Serpens Caput halfway between Arcturus and Antares and 0.5 degrees north of 5 Serpentis. It was discovered by the German astronomer Gottfried Kirch in May 1702 but independently rediscovered by Messier in 1764 (Kirch did not publish his discovery).
