LRO observations supporting the LCROSS mission for target selection, pre-impact, and post-impact will be highlighted. LRO observations helped identify potential LCROSS impactor targets during the commissioning and early baseline mission operations and were essential in determining the final LCROSS target for the October 9, 2009 impact near the lunar South Pole. LRO plans to characterize the LCROSS impact site in detail before the impact from its nominal 50-km baseline mission orbit. LRO will perform observations of the LCROSS impact itself that complement Earth-based and Earth-orbiting observations and observations from the LCROSS shepherding spacecraft. In addition, LRO will collect data after the impact occurs in order to characterize the evolution of the transient lunar atmosphere and the resulting impact crater.
