An overview of the class of luminous supersoft X-ray sources will be presented. Reference will be made to a variety of recent theoretical studies that relate to the evolution of the sources, and to their observable properties in the Local Group as well as in distant galaxies. The discussion will focus on recent calculations that indicate that this class of source may lead to a rate of Type Ia supernovae that is a significant fraction of the rate observed.
