The hypothesis underlying K-feldspar thermochronometry, that a single-energy Fickian diffusion is operating at all temperatures, has been investigated. Three isothermal heating experiments on a granitic microcline show that a discrete distribution of domain sizes is unable to explain experimental data. A continuous distribution of domain sizes also fails, as its temperature dependence is incorrect. The most likely explanation is that fast pathway diffusion is superimposed on the variety of diffusion mechanisms predicted by kinetic theory. This prevents extrapolation of laboratory experiments to geological conditions. Geological models based on K-feldspar thermochronometry must be seriously re-examined and limited to non-isotopic constraints.
