The aim of this project is co obtain ultraviolet energy distributions for a sample of hoc B subdwarfs. This is part of a comprehensive program aimed at better understanding the properties and evolutionary status of these stars. The ultraviolet data will be combined with photometric and spectrophotometric optical data and these will be analyzed with the help of detailed model atmosphere calculations. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry provides a sensitive discriminant of the effective temperature in these relatively hot stars (25,000 K < Te < 40,000 K). With reliable determinations of the temperature, analyses of the optical data will yield improved values of the gravity and the H/He ratio in these stars. The ultimate goal of this program is to understand the physical processes (convection, diffusion, radiative forces) that are at work in the atmospheres and envelopes of sdB stars, and their effects on the superficial chemical composition of these objects.
