Fluctuations in the elastric field of the equatorial ionosphere are examined on a time scale longer than ion cyclotron periods of about 0.6 s, or for frequencies much less than 100 rad/s. Observations of these waves with periods larger than 45 s are reported from the high time-resolution data taken at Jicamarca, Peru. The interpretation of these fluctuations as hydromagnetic modes is considered.
