Data from a digital, three-component seismic array, in operation during summer 1987 and 1988 at Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy), allow us to put experimental constraints on the seismic source of the shallower events connected to volcanic activity in the region. Spectral and wave-polarization analyses, based on the properties of the covariance matrix of the three-component signals, emphasize sharp similarities between different stations. Evidence is provided of a possibly very complex source, which cannot be explained by a simple model.
