Gringauz et al. (1976, 1977) have suggested that low-energy electrons in the optical shadow of Venus are the source of the nocturnal ionosphere of the planet. In the present paper it is shown that Pioneer-Venus data confirm this hypothesis as well as the hypothesis of Gringauz et al. concerning the concentration of neutral particles in the nocturnal atmosphere at a height of 140 km. Venera 9 and 10 electron density data and Pioneer-Venus neutral-particle data are used to calculate the value of ionization of the Venusian atmosphere.
