In this study we investigate observations collected since 1995 of the low charge state heavy ions and solar wind origin ions in the magnetosheath, the region between Earth's magnetopause and bow shock, using energetic (~10 keV to ~3 MeV) ion data from the EPIC (Energetic Particle and Ion Composition) experiment on the Geotail spacecraft. We have recently demonstrated that the flux of energetic (10-210 keV/e) ionospheric ions traveling away from Earth sunward of the bow shock is much higher than understood previously. The energetic low charge state heavy ions of ionospheric origin, mainly O+1 and N+1, are typically observed concurrently with solar wind origin ions in flux enhancements known as diffuse upstream events. The low charge state heavy ions and solar wind origin ion fluxes in upstream events have different anisotropy characteristics, low charge state heavy ions are strongly propagating, the solar wind origin ions are weakly anisotropic. The solar wind origin ions are generally understood to be energized at the bow shock by the Fermi mechanism. However, in the near-Earth magnetosphere, the ring current and quasi-trapping region have been shown to have energetic populations of all these ions and may contribute to the fluxes observed concurrently with the upstream low charge state heavy ions. We will report on the composition and angular distributions of ion flux enhancements observed in the magnetosheath.
