A low-background IR camera with image translation for astronomical observations is described. The background level on photodetectors over the range 8.5 - 11.9 μm was 10-4W/cm2 or 5×1015 photon/(cm2s). The camera walls and translating optics were cooled with liquid nitrogen. The cooling time was 8 hours. Daily variations of the background power on the photodetectors were ±6% and were related to variations in the ambient temperature. In most cases the nighttime background level was lower.
