A mechanism is proposed for the generation of longitudinal electric fields in the magnetospheric plasma. A double electric layer is formed at the wave front of Alfven waves propagating in the magnetosphere, causing the cold electrons to accelerate. While in the absence of a hot plasma the layer potential is small, the presence of a hot plasma significantly increases this potential and decreases the critical current value required for the generation of large longitudinal electric fields.
