It is shown here that longitudinal confinement of virtual geomagnetic
poles can arise from the smoothing of nonantipodal stable directions
before and after a geomagnetic reversal, because of the filtering effect
of the remanence acquisition process in sediments. The origin of this
nonantipodality is still uncertain.
