Long-slit low-dispersion spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 1068 and Mrk 3 will be acquired with STIS, to obtain the wide range of spatially-resolved UV and visible emission lines needed to determine density gradients in the narrow- line region {NLR}, determine the intrinsic reddening in the NLR, study the kinematics of the NLR, and verify the existence of a hidden broad line region {BLR} and luminous continuum source. Both of these galaxies have extended [O III] emission line regions and show evidence, revealed by spectropolarimetry, for hidden BLRs. As part of this study, detailed photoionization models will be calculated to help determine the physical conditions in the NLR gas as a function of position, and thereby estimate the intrinsic luminosity of the photoionizing continuum source and test the unified model for Seyfert galaxies.
