D1 results from Collm and D2 results from Kuhlungsborn for winter and summer suggest that the long-period variations noted in the prevailing circulation for 90-100 km at medium latitudes have an internal atmosphere cause, and are of climatic character with a time-scale of about 10 years. Direct solar control is shown to be insufficient to explain the 40-70 percent variation in the tidal amplitudes found from recent satellite data. Possible sources for the present variations are discussed, including the mechanism of momentum deposition and generation of turbulence by breaking internal gravity waves.
