The Soviet Lomonossow project, whose astrometry satellite will measure the angular separation of about 400,000 stars and of about 30 extragalactic objects and 40 objects within the solar system with an accuracy of a thousandth of an arcsec, is discussed. The layout of the satellite is shown and described, and the optimization of its trajectory and measuremernt program is reviewed. A comparison is made between the Lomonossow and Hipparcos projects.
