A simple and practical method by which aperture wavefront changes can be calculated to achieve local suppression of diffraction effects to detect dim stellar companions is presented. The possibility of significantly reducing the effects of diffraction in local areas near the bright central peak is demonstrated. Application of this method to the W. M. Keck telescope actuated mirror segments may make it possible to obtain better sensitivity than previously assumed when attempting to detect planetary systems around nearby stars or dim stellar companions.
