Some theories concerning the distribution of interstellar dust are surveyed. Average reddening and the distribution of local dust studied by means of ultraviolet photometry are discussed. The existence of local dust in the pole directions, local voids, variations of color excess with distance, and properties of local diffuse dust clouds are among the topics considered.
