It is shown numerically and analytically that, in the current sheet at the outer boundary of the core, there arises an MHD instability localized in a narrow region at midlatitudes. Disturbances move toward the west with a velocity of the order of that of the westward drift and may be connected with observed foci of short-period geomagnetic variations.
