Results from a search for galactic axions in the 4.5-5.0 microeV mass range, corresponding to the 1.09-1.22 GHz vacuum expectation energy range, are reported. A 6-T superconducting solenoid with a 20-cm bore is used in the experimental set-up. A limit of 10 to the -21st W on the power from a narrow axion-conversion line corresponding to 5sigma is given, and a theoretical expected power, P(a), that is a factor of 300 lower than the experimental limit is found. From a search for the presence of a continuous spectrum of light pseudoscalar particles, a limit on the coupling constant of about 10 to the -11th Ge/V is found under the assumption that the spectrum is bounded between the upper and lower frequencies, delta f = 130 MHz.
