The effectiveness of formulas of mean free path theory for plasma conductivity in the upper ionosphere (100-1000 km) is compared with that of formulas of kinetic theory on the basis of a numerical analysis of both approaches. Major discrepancies between the two theories are noted for heights above the level of the principal maximum of electron concentration, and the limits of applicability of the mean free path theory are established.
