The Odin research satellite is a joint Sweden, Canada, France and Finland mission. Odin is in a sun-synchronous terminator orbit at an altitude of approximately 600 km, with the at ascending node 1800 LT and a period of 96.7 min. Since spring 2001 the Optical Spectrograph and Infrared Imaging System (OSIRIS) instrument has measured the atmospheric limb brightness in the spectral range from the UV to the near IR (280 nm to 800 nm) with a 1 nm resolution. In order to scan the limb the entire spacecraft is nodded between 6 km and 100 km, although on occasions the altitude scan range is limited to between 70 km and 100 km, or between 6 km and 65 km. While OSIRIS operates mainly in the stratospheric mode (6 to 65 km scan range), many Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMCs) were detected in scan measurements of the mesosphere over the summer northern polar region during 2001 and over the summer southern polar region in 2001/2002. In particular, more than 200 clouds were observed in summer 2001 between 66.4o N and 82o N (the limit of OSIRIS viewing horizon) with an increasing poleward frequency. The average PMC height was found to be approximately 82.5 km. The broad spectral range of OSIRIS provides a unique opportunity to obtain PMC color information. In this paper the results from the analysis spectra of several bright PMCs are discussed. For the assumption of a lognormal distribution of Mie scatterers made of ice; the particle radius was determined to be in the range from 70 nm to 80 nm for a 1.4 distribution width.
