SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric ChartographY) was proposed in 1988 to fly on ENVISAT, which was launched on the evening of the 28th February 2002 from Kourou in French Guyana. The main scientific objectives of SCIAMACHY is to investigate the stratospheric and tropospheric composition of trace constituents. To achieve this goal the SCIAMACHY instrument requires a scanning mirror and telescope, spectrometer, calibration, thermal and electronic subsystems. Light enters the instrument via two scanning mirrors, which enable scattered light from either the nadir or limb of the atmosphere to be observed. In addition the mirror system enables observations to be made during solar and lunar occultation. After passing through an off axis parabolic mirror the light is focused onto the entrance slit of the spectrometer. The spectrometer comprise eight spectral channels and observes simultaneously the spectrum between continuously between 220 and 1750 nm, from 1940 to 2040 nm and from 2263 to 2380 nm: spectral channels having spectral resolutions of 0.2 nm to 1.4 nm respectively. Inversion of the limb measurements yields vertical profiles of the trace atmospheric constituents. The presentation will discuss the inversion and show the first measurements from SCIAMACHY.
