The brightness of outdoor lighting in the vicinity of astronomical observatories has been increasing by 20 percent annually. While the formerly prevalent incandescent lighting emitted most of its energy in the yellow, red, and IR, thereby leaving the blue and UV regions of the spectrum uncontaminated, mercury vapor lighting is concentrated in six strong emission lines, of which three are in the blue and UV. The 4358 A mercury vapor line masks the 4363 A emission of triply ionized oxygen that is important to the study of plasma behavior in gaseous nebulae. Attention is given to practical solutions to this problem.
