Optical light echoes from SN 1987A have been detected with various telescoppes at ESO, La Silla as early as 16 August 1987. At the present epoch they are predominantly in the form of two concentric rings with radii of 33 and 55 arcsec (March 1988). The reflecting material producing the inner and outer ring is situated at a distance of 122 and 316 pc respectively in front of SN 1987A. Spectra of both the inner and outer rings are similar to those of SN 1987A near maximum light i.e. 17 May 1987, and could be the composite spectrum integrated over the dominant part of the light curve at maximum. Within the errors this agrees with the time of origin for the observed expansion whose current rate is ≡3 arcsec/month.
