Observation techniques for the plotting of light curves for eclipsing variable (binary) stars (EV) and a computer program for their numerical evaluation are presented. The importance of EV observations is seen in the fact that their absolute mass and dimensions can be calculated by analyzing their light curves. The classification of EV by light-curve types and the history of attempts to interpret the curves are reveiwed. The theoretical basis, input parameters, and logical organization of a computer program developed by Wilson and Devinney (1971) for the numerical solution of the direct EV problem (plotting the light curve of a hypothetical EV of given size, distance, and type) and the inverse EV problem (calculate the most likely set of EV characteristics for an observed light curve) are discussed, and examples of its use are shown. Standardized observation techniques, including filter and photoelectric-measurement systems, are suggested to enable amateur astronomers to contribute to the study of EV.
