Lidar observations were obtained between November 1982 and December 1984 using a Nd:YAG laser to study the characteristics of stratospheric aerosols associated with the 1982 El Chichon eruption. Increased aerosol loading is noted up to February 1983, with marked nightly variability up to March 1983. A 1/e decay time is found between April and October 1983, and a strong correlation in height between the bottom of the observed aerosol layer and the tropopause is noted. A progressive change in the optical properties of the aerosol with height above 15 km is shown based on 532 and 355 nm observations. It is suggested that aerosols observed above the main layer in February 1983 arose by transport from the polar region.
