A ruby lidar differential absorption system is described. The light source, a ruby laser, can be tuned over an absorption line with a spectrum between 0.6942 and 0.6943 microns. The ruby lidar DIAL system designed to measure vertical profiles of absolute humidity consists of two ruby lasers and two telescopes. Total overlapping of the laser beams with the telescope field of view occurs at an altitude of about 250 m. The lasers are temperature controlled and are used as transmitters, and the backscattered signal from each is digitized and stored separately. Profiles of the absolute humidity were compared with radiosonde and airborne measurements, and results are discussed.
