Within the framework of the beta-plane approximation, a simple analytical model is constructed for the propagation of large-scale disturbances in the stratospheric polar-night jet region. To this end, a realistic approximation of the refractive index is used which permits the variables in the wave equation to be separated. It is shown that the observed latitudinal localization of disturbances near the jet axis is determined only by the planetary wave-mean zonal flow interaction and is due to wave refraction toward the region of the local-latitudinal refractive-index maximum (the focusing effect). The localization and propagation of disturbances are highly dependent on the zonal flow structure and, in particular, on the meridian curvature and vertical shift of velocity.
