We have analyzed nine seasons of Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) polar mesospheric cloud (PMC) measurements, covering December 2004 to February 2009, to characterize zonally averaged PMC local time variations as a function of latitude in both hemispheres. OMI observations show a distinct difference in PMC local time variations between Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere data. Northern Hemisphere results show a strong mid-morning (6-8 hr LT) peak up to 75°N that diminishes rapidly in magnitude at higher latitudes. Southern Hemisphere results show a minimum in the early evening (18-20 hr LT), with strong increases towards early morning (> 2 hr LT) and late morning (< 12 hr LT) at all latitudes up to the pole. OMI’s cross-track viewing capability results in measurement scattering angles as low as 70°, so that ice phase function effects must also be considered in the interpretation of these data. We will present the impact of different particle size distribution assumptions on the local time variations derived from OMI PMC data. We will also consider possible functional fits to these data, and discuss the implications for long-term PMC trend analysis.
