Scientific paper

The two-step resonant photoionization (TRP) technique for the laser spectroscopy of single atoms and molecules is described, and the stages of its development are reviewed. The characteristics of the TRP technique are considered, including sensitivity, spectral resolution, time resolution, selectivity, and universality. Finally, applications of the technique in nuclear physics, astrophysics, the analysis of atom and molecule tracks, the structural analysis of biomolecules, and the analysis of ruthenium concentrations in the ocean are discussed.
