Samples of matrix and melt glass from the Peace River shocked L6 chondrite were subjected to Ar-40/Ar-39 analysis using both stepped heating and localized outgassing by a laser probe. The laser probe was used to analyze Ar from single 80 micron diameter laser pits which release gas from a few micrograms of sample to study whether or not the plateau age (450 + or - 30 Ma) is meaningful or is an artifact resulting from partial degassing during the fragmentation of the parent body which commenced the exposure of Peace River to cosmic rays 40 Ma ago. Measurements of the melt glass gave variable and meaningless ages due to retention of Ar-40 and loss of K during melting followed by rapid quenching.
