As an intermediate step towards a very large telescope (VLT), ESO
decided to design and build a New Technology Telescope (NTT) with a
mirror measuring 3.5 m in diameter. This telescope will help reduce
demand on the 3.6 m telescope and will offer an opportunity for
practical testing of new ideas for telescope design.
