The optical system and operation of a two-frequency ac laser interferometer (ACLI) are explained. Advantages of the ACLI over conventional transducers include high repeatability and resolution of displacement measurement, high accuracy, and long-range optical path. Possible sources of error include variation in the index of refraction of air, cosine error, machine geometry, and light-beam disturbances. The use of an ACLI as a transducer in numerical and adaptive control is discussed.
