Recent progress in the laser excitation ``Planetary Atoms'', a certain class of three-body Coulomb states where two highly excited electrons move at different radial distances from a positive ion, is presented. The experiments confirm the dipolar structure of planetary atoms, and highlight the effects of non-Coulombic perturbations which are present in all real atoms, including helium.
