The results of magnetometer measurements of substorm-triggered geomagnetic pulsations (Pi-2s) and auroral breakup, obtained at 20 stations in the U.S. and Canada on October 22-27, 1979, as part of the International Magnetospheric Study, are reported, and a simple heuristic model of Pi-2 morphology and evolution is proposed. The station coordinates are listed; the data-reduction procedures are explained; and the data are presented in maps, graphs, magnetograms, and diagrams. It is found that Pi-2s and substorm current systems can arise equatorward of the Harang discontinuity, in association with quiet-arc brightening near the equatorward edge of visible auroral activity and primarily as a result of field-aligned and ionospheric currents. The model computations are shown to predict the Pi-2 polarization structure, suggesting the 20-50-km/s westward motion of a transient current system as a possible Pi-2 triggering mechanism.
