The algorithm of the Wiener filter (WF) and constrained realizations is applied to the analysis of wide-field surveys of the large scale structure (LSS). Within the linear regime the WF is the optimal way of reconstructing the large scale density and velocity fields from sparse and noisy data bases with an incomplete sky coverage. Constrained realizations are used to probe the statistical deviations from the WF estimated field and to produce Monte-Carlo simulations of the actual universe given the data and assumed cosmological model. A detailed description of the reconstruction of the LSS from the MARK III and SFI catalog of radial velocities is presented. The convergence of the bulk velocities is analyzed, and it is found that about a third of the amplitude of the CMB dipole in contributed by structure beyond a distance of about 60 Mpc/h. Analyzing the local tidal field we find it is dominated by structure within a sphere of ≈ 200 Mpc/h.
