The paper shows that the sectoral structure of the interplanetary magnetic field may be caused by the large-scale spiral waves on the equatorial plane. This plane is a neutral sheet for the fundamental solar dipolar field, and the magnetic induction on it approximates zero. However, if a spiral wave is excited in the equatorial plane, the sectoral structure would occur with all the observed basic features, and possible existence of spiral waves rotating rigidly with the sun can be shown. It can be proved that the stability of the spiral wave is neutral by using a model in which the viscosity and thermal conductivity are neglected. Finally, theoretical estimates are made about the wave length and pitch angle which roughly agree with many properties of the interplanetary magnetic field obtained from space observations.
