Pitch angle distributions of auroral electrons, energy range 1-159 keV, were measured by the Kosmos-261 and Kosmos-348 satellites spinning about their respective centers of mass. The bulk of the measurements are isotropic distributions corresponding to weak and pronounced diffusion. Large-scale longitudinal distributions similar to those discerned in ISIS satellite data were observed, predominantly in the post-midnight and pre-dawn sectors on closed envelopes of the polar auroral belt on magnetically quiet days during substorm recovery phases. Their origin is attributed to inward drifting of particles exhibiting a longitudinal distribution at the plasma sheath. Fermi acceleration, scattering of particles in the plasma layer, and conduction in the auroral ionosphere are discussed.
