The formation, growth, and destruction of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMCs) are believed to be very sensitive to temperature fluctuations caused by atmospheric wave dynamics on various scales. Recently, global numerical weather prediction systems have been extended into the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region which allows them to address the fundamental dynamical processes underlying the distribution of PMCs. One such system is the Advanced Level Physics High-Altitude (ALPHA) prototype of the NRL Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). As part of the NASA Aeronomy of Ice (AIM) mission, NOGAPS-ALPHA has been utilized to assimilate observations of temperature and water vapor content from the MLS and SABER instruments during the northern hemisphere 2007 PMC season. Saturation ratios derived diagnostically from assimilated temperatures and water vapor fields at PMC altitudes and latitudes agree well with seasonal variations in PMC frequency derived from AIM data. The synoptic model data output is ideal for a detailed study of large-scale wave dynamics present during the PMC season. Here we present the major dynamical features, such as the quasi 5-day and 2-day waves, as seen by NOGAPS-ALPHA and compare these results to observations from AIM instruments. In addition, we compare NOGAPS-ALPHA saturation fields with observations of mid- latitude clouds as seen by both the Spatial Heterodyne Imager of Mesospheric radicals (SHIMMER) satellite instrument as well as ground based observers.
