Geological and geophysical data suggest that during the evolution of the Earth and its species, that there have been many mass extinctions due to large impacts from comets and large asteroids, and major volcanic events. With current technology, protective measures for the planet can be considered. Evidence of the ecological disruption and frequency of these major events is presented. Surveillance and warning systems are most critical to develop wherein sufficient lead times for warnings exist so that appropriate interventions could be designed. The long term research undergirding these warning systems, implementation, and proof testing is rich in opportunities for collaboration for peace.
