The most reliable and complete seismological data have been utilized to define three seismic energy highs associated with large (M >= 7.5), intermediate depth earthquakes (h >= 70 km) in the Hellenic arc during 1800-1985. These highs were correspondingly followed by the three eruption cycles which occurred on the volcano of Santorini during the same time interval. The time lag is of the order of 15 years. The distance between Santorini and the epicentre of the shocks ranges from about 60 to 200 km. These results agree with those found in other island arcs of the world. Possible geodynamic correlation between deep seismicity and magma formation along the upper surface of the descending slab is discussed.
