Two cases of a midday cusp auroral dynamics are studied in relation to changes in the solar wind. Attention is focused on the small-scale dynamics of individual auroral forms in the midday cusp as well as more large-scale behavior of the oval in the magnetic midday sector. One case illustrates the response of the optical aurora and the geomagnetic field in the cusp when a compression in the solar wind impinges on the earth's magnetosphere. The effect of the IMF B(Y) component on the geomagnetic signature at different stations close to the cusp aurora is shown. The response of the midday port of the oval to distinct southward and northward turnings of the magnetosheath magnetic field is described, and certain small-scale auroral dynamics are discussed as possible effects of impulsive plasma transport across the dayside magnetosphere.
