We present an average aerosol scattering matrix as a function of scattering angle obtained from measurements on seven mineral aerosol samples at the wavelengths 442 nm and 633 nm. The aerosol samples used to produce this average cover a broad range in particle size and composition, and are all highly irregular. This average aerosol scattering matrix may be used for radiative transfer models and as a reference matrix. For example, we compare it with results of ray-optics calculations using Gaussian random particles. Excellent agreement is obtained.
