Spherical hematite concretions can form without a nucleus.
Self-organized zones of super-saturated solution cause spherical
precipitates of amorphous iron-hydroxide. Diffusion of Fe ions towards
the outer perimeter of the amorphous sphere forms a rind, which then
grows inwards.
